The Leopold Group is the Southeast Iowa Group of the Iowa Chapter of the Sierra Club. The Leopold Group encompasses the Iowa counties of Louisa, Wapello, Jefferson, Henry, Des Moines, Davis, Van Buren and Lee and regularly meets in Fairfield, Iowa. Our name honors renowned conservationist Aldo Leopold, a native of Burlington, Iowa.
In A Sand County Almanac, Leopold wrote about a “land ethic,” [which] enlarges the boundaries of the community to include soils, waters, plants, and animals, or collectively: the land.”
Iowa today is in sore need of a land ethic. Agricultural practices in our state continue to cause erosion of our rich prairie soils, and contribute to the dead zone in the Gulf of Mexico.
Since the Leopold Group was relocated to Fairfield in the late 1990s, we have lead the clean-up of a local creek that runs through one of our county parks and are starting projects on the second main creek through our area. We have been given a primary role of responsibility for water quality in the City of Fairfield’s Green Strategic Plan.
We sponsor films and speakers to educate the public about environmental issues—especially about the dangers of pesticides and other chemicals, and the need for sustainable agriculture. We also give awards to local environmental leaders.
The Leopold Group will continue to support the Iowa Chapter in lobbying for good environmental legislation and pursue local environmental efforts. We hope to expand our outreach to surrounding counties.
