World Fair Field UN International Day of Peace Symposium (9/21) and International Festival (9/22)

Maharishi School (member organization); Fairfield Cultural Alliance (member organization)

Friday, September 21, the official United Nations International Day of Peace, will be marked with a symposium on the theme of “Compassionate Community, Compassionate Civilization.” The event will enhance global awareness and encourage local civic involvement by engaging students with businesses and civic organizations dedicated to meeting common sustainability goals.
Examples might include the hunger dialogues and the local food pantry partnering with the college’s department of Sustainable Living and Regenerative Agriculture—or Habitat for Humanity partnering with suppliers of “green” building materials and alternative energy sources. Participants include the Fairfield Public Schools, the Maharishi School, local and regional chapters of the UN Association, in conjunction with Maharishi University of Management and Iowa Wesleyan University in Mt. Pleasant.

Saturday, September 22, on the other hand, is pure celebration. Central Park will be surrounded with large international flags and we will begin with a “Parade of Nations” including as many as possible of the cultures currently living in Fairfield. Shops and restaurants on the square will be invited to take part by being open and highlighting any international cultural connections. Continuing throughout the afternoon and evening on the square, diverse cultural groups will perform ethnic music and dancing in the central gazebo. The four quadrants will represent the Americas, Europe, Asia, Africa and the Middle East, with participants sharing their cultural history through games, specialty foods, crafts and artifacts. Children will get “passports” stamped and collect mementos as they gain insights at each“port of entry.” In the evening, an international wine and beer garden will be open while performances and street dancing continues till closing.
